Chiswick House & Gardens
New Cafe and Historic Grounds Restoration
Chiswick House is a neo-Palladian villa set in beautiful historic gardens which are the birthplace of the English Landscape Movement. The project involved restoring the grounds to the original design intent.
Key Outcomes:
A stunningly successful result, following a thorough stakeholder consultation process, which encouraged a contemporary cafe to be constructed within the area of one of the UK’s most important Grade 1* buildings.
Our Approach
Joanne Sawicki was a founder Trustee for the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust, which was responsible for conceiving and managing the entire £23m restoration project. As a joint venture between London Borough of Hounslow and English Heritage (Historic England) Joanne managed the mediation process between the two organisations and the Heritage Lottery Fund. As well as instigating the new the branding and positioning, she led the very complex consultation with the local community.
Our Process
Paul Cayford instigated the community consultation questionnaire – varying strategies of design direction were shown to the community by an online questionnaire. The community overwhelmingly voted for a contemporary intervention. Through the tendered competition process architects Caruso St John were selected.
The Results
The already popular venue is now even more popular and inclusive. The important gardens are thriving and showcase the origins of the English Garden movement.
